FAQ

  • Who is eligible?
Any University of Ottawa student admitted in a part-time or full-time program and any full-time employee (permanent or contractual with benefits).

  • What is this program about?
The University of Ottawa has made arrangements to facilitate the purchase of personal notebook computers from Apple and Dell. These computers are competitively priced as per the companies’ education discounts. Specific models are recommended to support schooling applications. These models will run utilities and will benefit from first level support from the University of Ottawa’s Computing and Communications Services.

  • How do I get a notebook computer?
The student/employee can either order a personal notebook computer directly from the company’s Web site or purchase it at the University of Ottawa’s Cosmos Computer Store. The computers are sold at the same price in both places.

  • Why Apple and Dell?
We want to give the choice of both platforms: Apple as it is so popular in the Education sector and Dell as it is the University of Ottawa’s corporate standard.

  • What is the benefit for me?
You will have the peace of mind of knowing that the notebook has been tested and will run the applications required for your classes.

You will buy a computer competitively priced for students and normally lower than electronic superstores.

You will have access to utilities (WiFi config, Antivirus), free of charge, that have been tested to run on those models.

Computing and Communications Services is in close contact with its suppliers Dell and Apple to get a better knowledge of the selected products and to provide an optimum training environment. Our privileged ties with Dell and Apple allow us to have a direct communication with their service centres.

You will have a standard computer similar to that of hundreds of your peers, making it easier to compare and share information.

The University of Ottawa will negotiate software bundles (e.g. Office software) over time to further increase the added value for students.

The University of Ottawa will use its negotiating power to insure that its clientele is very satisfied with its equipment.

  • When does the program start?
The program will be in full gear for back-to-school in mid-August 2010.

  • Was there not an Apple program (Student Web site) and Computer Store sales before?
Yes. For years, the Cosmos Computer Store was selling Apple computers and other brands to students. Also for years now, the University of Ottawa was buying Dell as its corporate standard. What is new is that we have put the two together for everyone’s benefit: Apple and Dell will be accessible to both students and the institution.

  • Why do this now?
Because the University of Ottawa has deployed its "WiFi" access across campus and therefore wants the students to make use of it. Also, the University of Ottawa has recently included Apple as a supported platform on campus.
